The Osteosarcoma Decision Aid (OsDA) for Surgery in the Lower Limb is an online, interactive website designed to provide information about surgical options for newly diagnosed patients.
The development of the website follows the International Decision Aid Standards and also applies to the surgical decision for Ewing sarcoma.
Features include:
- Risks and benefits for each option
- Patient stories
- Potential complications
- Questions for your surgeon
- Exercises to help families think through what is most important to them
- Long-term considerations,, such as additional decisions for surgery and prosthetics
Since inception, the content and format have been guided and informed by patients, parents, and providers.
The OsDA was alpha tested with conference attendees at FACTOR 2020. Following revisions, it is being beta tested with the targeted population: people who are unfamiliar with Osteosarcoma. The final revision will be pilot tested with patients and families making the decision by the end of 2022.
When released to the Osteosarcoma community, the OsDA will be available at www.OsteosarcomaDecisionAid.com
The OsDA was developed by Janet Panoch, PhD, Department of Pediatrics, Indiana University School of Medicine, with funding from the Osteosarcoma Collaborative. Dr. Panoch is also mom to Osteosarcoma survivor, Zoe, who had a limb salvage surgery in 2007 and an above-knee amputation in 2018.
